What Kind of Pillows Do Hotels Use and What Should You Use for Your Rental Accommodation?

Running a hotel, especially an upscale one, means providing the best quality bedding. After all, having somewhere to sleep and relax at is the main reason why people book accommodations. If you are setting up an Airbnb property or a short-term rental accommodation, you must know what kind of pillows do hotels use in order to provide quality sleep experience that will surely make your guests happy.

Firm or Soft?

People have different preferences regarding the firmness of the pillows they rest their head on at night. Ideally, it should be something that will provide enough support to the head and neck area.

We all have different bodies, so it is hard to strike the perfect pillow firmness that will suit everyone.

What majority of hotels do is they provide both soft and medium firm pillows on the bed. The firm ones are usually stored in the wardrobe if needed by guests and can be requested if they are not in the bedroom already.

Other hotels even have a whole menu to suit every possible guest need, but that is not totally necessary for an independent accommodations provider.

We recommend having at least one soft pillow and one firm pillow available for each guest. This combination offers option and flexibility at the same time.

Down Filling or Polyester?

Down filling is the first choice among popular hotel chains such as Marriott and Hilton. It consists of fine bird feathers found under tough exterior feathers.

Pillows with down filling are malleable but need fluffing often. They absorb moisture and tend to stay warm.

One concern about down filling is that some people might be allergic to them.

Down alternative pillows are available. They are made from clusters of fibers such as polyester.

They are a good choice because they provide a similar luxurious feel with down pillows at a fraction of the cost.

The best feature of a down alternative pillow is that it is easily washable. It is very important to keep pillows in hygienic condition and hence regular washing is necessary.

Memory foam is another type of pillow. There is no filling per se, but the pillow is rather manufactured as a big block of foam.

It is meant to take the shape of your head when you lie on it, which should provide better support. Memory foam pillows have a slightly different shape than traditional pillows, so they will look different in bed.

The pillow choice that we will go for to use in a short-term rental accommodation is down alternative, essentially because they are very easy to clean.

Standard Size Only?

Oftentimes, hotel pillows are of standard size, but they only look fuller and aesthetically bigger because of how they are arranged and presented.

Yes, the standard size of 51×66 cm might be popular, but you always have the freedom to provide different sizes if you think it will add to the appeal of the sleeping area.

However, pillowcase options for other sizes are limited. We prefer just the standard size for this very reason. It lessens the hassle for when the time comes that you need to replace the bed linen.

In summary, you must provide hotel quality pillows that have down alternative filling in standard size and there should be at least one soft and one firm pillow for every guest that books your short-term rental accommodation.

Once you’ve chosen the pillows, covering them with pillow protectors is the next step. This is necessary if you want to prolong the life of your pillows.

  1. This is great information! I am going to start using my spare bedroom on air b&b because we are on the beach, and it would be a great way to make some extra money. I had not thought about the bedding. But you are right, some like soft and some like firm. These are all great considerations. Thanks!

    1. Thank you Matts Mom 🙂 Good luck on trying out Airbnb. It sure is a great way to earn extra money. There are a lot of things that you can employ to get bookings and to command a higher pricing, and one of them is by providing visually stylish and highly presentable photos. I hope you’ll find other posts in my website useful in the future.
