It is very important to make the living room as comfortable as possible for the guests in a vacation rental home. The main furniture that needs to be highlighted is the sofa primarily because it is the first thing that people use in the living room whenever they choose to lounge around and have a rest. It is also the perfect spot to get comfortable in to either watch TV or read a book. Choosing the best quality sofa is not that hard if you take into account the following factors.
First things first, make sure you measure the floor area available in your living room. Take a note of how much are you going to allow for a big piece of furniture such as the sofa, and what other elements are you going to add to the area.
Consider the maximum height as well if the sofa will be placed against the wall. If there is going to be anything hanging on the wall, such as a shelf or a painting, you want to make sure that you leave a good amount of space for that.
There are a lot of sofa shapes available out there. I am not going to enumerate them all here, but I will just point the main characteristics you must look out for depending on the design you are aiming for.
Modular or Sectional
A modular or sectional sofa comes with parts that you can put together in different configurations. This is very versatile and often suits large spaces. The best example is an L-shaped couch. It usually has two parts that form a letter “L” when placed side-by-side.
Linear sofas are characterized by just a straight back. The seating capacity varies, but they are usually two-seater up to four-seater.
Most sofas that are not modular are linear sofas. A chaise lounge is an example of a linear sofa. It is basically a chair that is long enough to support the legs as well.
Soft and Rounded
Some sofa styles have soft and rounded corners, which evoke a highly classic in look. Either the backrest has an arched shape or the armrests would have a rolled up shape. The best example is the chesterfield.
A chesterfield sofa is distinguished by a back and armrests that fold outward. They are very traditional in look and usually have patterned buttons all throughout.
Sharp and Strong
Sofa designs with sharp and strong features include those that have sharp corners as opposed to rounded. They are usually categorized as modern. They are still stylish without overpowering other elements in the room. An example of this is the tuxedo.
A tuxedo sofa has the same armrest height and backrest height. It is geometric and often has clean square patterns all throughout.
There are various materials for couch covers. Each one has a different feel and durability. The following are the common ones available in the market.
Macrosuede is the most luxurious man-made suede. It is very soft to the touch and looks sophisticated.
There are various types of cotton material for couches. The most common is linen cotton. They are very versatile and breathable. They are usually thickly woven that makes them highly durable.
The leather is a material made from animal skin. Couches covered with leather material are proven to stay durable for a good number of years if proper care and maintenance are done occasionally. They naturally fade in time, which adds more character to a sofa. They are easy to clean whenever there are spills.
Faux leather is the cheaper alternative to leather. They last a long time if taken care of properly, but they are still prone to cracking when subjected to varying degrees of moisture all the time.
Depending on how bold your overall color scheme is, it is best to choose the softest color for your couch. It would be easier to decorate and add pops of color with accessories rather than having to adjust everything to the color of the biggest furniture in the living room.
Sofa fillings are usually composed of feathers, polyester foam, or a combination of both.
Polyester foam is the most common filling. They come in various densities. The expensive, good quality ones are usually high-density and last longer in this category.
Feather-filled couches are a lot softer than foam-filled couches. They are also more costly. It is important to have water-resistant covers if choosing this type of filling because feathers don’t dry out easily.
As a rule of thumb, choose the best quality sofa that will stay in good shape for as long as you need it. Sofas tend to wear out easily since they are used all the time. Select one with a high-density foam, water-resistant cover, and one with a muted color that still suits your color palette.
